Geography, lake and mountains

The mountainous pre-alpine territory between the two southern arms of the lake (between Como, Bellagio, and Lecco) all knows as the Larian Triangle (Triangolo lariano). The Grigna, Resegone (1.855 m) Legnone (2.650 m) are the main mountain ranges on the East side of the lake, the Bregagno (2.092 m) and Berlinghera are on the western side of the lake and the San Primo mountain range lies in the Triangolo Lariano, the area in between the two branches of the lake. The northern branch begins at the town of Colico, while the towns of Comoand Lecco sit at the ends of the southwestern and southeastern branches respectively. The small towns of Bellagio,Menaggio and Lierna are situated at the intersection of the three branches of the lake: a triangular boat service operates between them. The Lierna area is an historical charming site of the lake with a white beach and a famous castle.

Summiting Europe’s Second Highest Peak

About the Mountain

Dych-Tau, Europe’s second highest peak, is one of the Caucasian Peaks and faces the Bezingi Wall across from the Bezingi Glacier. It is also the second highest peak of the Caucasus Mountains, after Mount Elbrus. This massive mountain is topped by two identical towers–the lower eastern peak is 16,900 feet high and is separated from the main peak by a steep, narrow saddle. Dych-Tau is incredibly steep on all sides, and is composed mainly of snow and ice. To make climbing even more difficult, windswept rock walls and ridges are interlaced throughout.

Dych-Tau is especially known for the technical skill required to climb the mountain and its frequent avalanches. With no easy path to the summit, this climb is a challenge for an experienced mountain climber.

Imagine a location beyond civilisation where isolation is only surpassed by beauty and grandeur. Envision one of the last great wilderness locations on the planet where wildlife compete for survival and struggle for their very lives in some of the harshest conditions that exist on earth. If you want to get away to such a place for the adventure vacation of a lifetime then Antarctica is the place that you will want to visit. It For sheer breathtaking beauty, awe inspiring challenges, and a history filled with feats of tremendous courage and super-human resilience it is without parallel. Not only will you find beautiful pristine white frozen landscapes with some amazing wildlife, but Antarctica can also truly be regarded as an amazing destination for a climbing adventure vacation. Standing as the greatest mountaineering challenge to be found there is the summit of Vinson Massif.

At an elevation of 16,050 feet (4,892 m) Vinson Massif is the highest peak on the continent of Antarctica. It rises out of the Sentinel Range of the Ellsworth Mountains above the Ronne Ice Shelf near the bottom of the Antarctic Peninsula. The massif itself is approximately 13 miles (21 km) long and 8.1 miles (13 km) wide and also includes the Vinson Plateau which contains a few peaks rising over 15,400 ft (4,700 m). Vinson Massif is located only 750 miles (1,200 km) from the South Pole, which definitely adds to the challenge and adventure.

Vinson Massif was first identified by a US NAVY aircraft in January 1958 and was named after U.S. Congressman Carl Vinson from Georgia, who had been a major supporter for funding Antarctic research. The peak of Vinson Massif wasn’t conquered until 1966 when a group of four climbers summited on December 18th followed by another four on December 19th and the final three on December 20th. Since that time the peak has been summited many times and does not prove to be technically difficult for climbers, although Antarctica still offers its fair share of physical challenges. All of the summits had been made by expeditions taking a route from the western side until January 2001 when the first ascent from the eastern side was achieved. As one of the seven highest mountains, on each of the world’s seven continents, and the 8th most prominent climbing peak in the world, it is prized by climbers wanting to work their way through a list of the world’s greatest summits.

Any climber wanting to challenge Vinson Massif must be in extremely fit physical condition and able to carry at least 30 pounds and able to pull another 20 pounds on a sled. A range of mountaineering skills are also required including self-arrest, glacier travel and crevasse rescue. Apart from the possession of previous climbing experience, any adventurer wanting to challenge Vinson Massif must be prepared for extreme cold and even ferocious winds. You can expect to be climbing for 8 hours per day and on summit day you can expect to spend 8 hours on the ascent and 6-7 hours to descend. The entire trip will typically last around 20 days and the journey to get to Antarctica can be made via flights from countries such as Chile.

There are many guide companies that provide guided expeditions and a quick web search will yield a number of them which you can choose from with detailed requirements and explanations of the trip, timing, and expected conditions. Along with the required climbing skills, experience, and physical requirements, at a typical average cost of around $30,000 per person to attempt the summit it is very much a vacation for the most serious of climbers. So if you are a climbing adventurer that can meet the physical requirements, skill pre-requisites, and are willing to take on the challenge and actually reach the peak of Vinson Massif, youwill be able to say that you have travelled to the bottom of the world…and climbed to the very top.

Aconcagua, The Highest Peak of South America

Aconcagua, the highest peak in South America and one of the Seven Summits, is a popular destination for mountain climbers of varied experience levels. It is part of the Andes mountain range, located in the Mendoza Province of Argentina. The mountain is approximately 6,960m (22,837ft) overall in height. The mountain was created by the subduction of the Nazca plate under the South American plate with the convergence of the two plates forming a ridge.

The mountain has many interesting defining features. It possesses many glaciers, the biggest of which is the Ventisquero Horcones Inferior at approximately 10km in length. Two other notable glacier systems include the Ventisquero de las Vacas Sur and Ventisquero Relinchos which are approximately 5km long. However, it is The Polish Glacier that is the most well-known upon Aconcagua.

The mountain attracts many climbers, with thousands visiting each year. It’s popularity is down to several different factors. It is particularly useful for climbers who wish to test themselves at high altitudes. Also, for those wishing to attempt Mount Everest, Aconcagua is good for preparation and is often used as a training step.
There are many things to consider before climbing Aconcagua. For example, it is important to plan which route you are going to take beforehand. The Northern Route, also known as The Normal Route due to its popularity, is relatively easy in that it does not require specialized climbing equipment. It follows the north ridge from Plaza de Mulas and is well marked out. The Polish Glacier Traverse route, also popular with climbers, is a little more difficult but still manageable. It ascends the southern face of the mountain, crossing the Vacas valley before ascending the Polish Glacier. While these are the two main routes, there are others to be considered as well. It should be noted that routes on the southern face of the mountain are more difficult than those on the northern side.

The climb and descent takes approximately 15 days overall, varying depending on the route taken and the skill level of the climber undertaking the challenge. There are several campsites en route and it is important to plan the journey beforehand to reach each campsite in good time while allowing a substantial rest at each stop.
Regardless of the relative ease of the climb, reaching the top of Aconcagua is no easy feat. The altitude effects of the climb are severe, though oxygen tanks are not necessary, and altitude sickness will affect the majority of climbers to some degree. This can really take its toll and may cause severe headaches and, thus, anyone wishing to attempt the climb must be prepared for the altitude. Temperatures are extremely cold and it is essential that climbers are prepared for the extreme weather and freezing conditions as most of the casualties that occur on the mountain are weather related. The best conditions for climbing occur from December to March, making this the general climbing season for Aconcagua.

It is necessary to train and prepare yourself before the climb. Running regularly will improve your general aerobic fitness, making the ascent easier on the body. It is also important to improve your overall strength, perhaps by weight-lifting, before undertaking the challenge. It is especially vital to start by climbing smaller mountains and working your way up rather than making the mistake of going straight for Aconcagua to prepare the body for the difficult gradient and conditions.

It should be noted that it is estimated that only 60% of those who attempt to climb the mountain successfully make it all the way to the summit so do not feel disheartened if, while climbing, you feel you cannot make it all the way to the top. As long as you gave it your best and had fun doing it.
